  • Ethiopian Muslim American protest the Ethiopian government’s attack on religious freedom

Ethiopian Muslim American protest the Ethiopian government’s attack on religious freedom in Ethiopia at a Washington DC march earlier this year. Many of the protesters learned about the repression in Ethiopia from Badr Communications news reporting. File photo. An Ethiopian man returned to his village to die peacefully; kidney dialysis cleanings were expensive – some cost an average person’s monthly salary – and the three required for a full recovery were too expensive. But they stepped in: the man’s brother appeared on TV and a stream of money poured in – from PalTalk, from their radio, from the cable show – and the treatments were paid for. Such is the work of Bilal Communications, an Islamic communication network based in Washington’s First Hijrah masjid that has woven together a web of support for Ethiopian Muslims, working behind the curtains to pull in news from Ethiopia and fan it out to Ethiopian Muslims around the world. Operating through 24 journalists based in Ethiopia, the Muslim network is Ethiopia’s first to jump into a world where muddy citizen journalism and traditional reporting spearhead social change. “We’re really a community,” Zenith Mohammed, the organization’s support group chairperson who joined in its early days, said. Its three projects, Bilal Radio - the nation’s first Islamic online radio - the Bilal Show - its cable interfaith dialogue show - and its Paltalk platform, EthioMuslim Interfaith Dialogue for Justice, have created a Bilal world, spanning across nearly a dozen countries and serving up social, civil rights, Islamic dawah news and discussion. Established in 2010, the network is a lifeline for Muslim Ethiopians caught under an oppressive republican government that has made practicing traditional Islam a challenge for the country’s 34 percent Muslims population. Hiding behind the Al-Ahbash, an Islamic movement based in Lebanon that falls outside fundamental Islamic teachings, the government has begun importing Al-Ahbash Muslim scholars to impose their interpretation of Islam on the Muslim of Ethiopia by revamping Muslim school curricula, removed Arabic studies, and restricted women from wearing hijab and men from growing beards. With a media clenched tightly by the government, awareness of these civil rights violations went beyond the public eye. “We needed to touch base with these Ethiopian Muslims more than ever,” Mohammed said. “We needed to find a voice for the voiceless.” Its first pioneering project in October 2009 – purchasing a shortwave radio frequency based in Ethiopia - quickly ended as financial burdens of over $17,000 a month put pressure on their pockets and as the government – wary of Ethiopian Muslims not affiliated with the Al-Ahbash sect and fearful of the possibility of an Al-Qaeda sown-movement - began to intercept their lines. However, in 2010, the group sprang back up, using the benefit of the Internet and headquarters outside of Ethiopia to curb the possibility of government interference. The Paltalk platform began as an interfaith dialogue chat room and continues to bridge understanding between Ethiopia’s Christian majority and Muslims, drawing Ethiopian scholars, daees, and politicians into hour-long discussions. On the heels of its success, Bilal Radio, an internet radio which presents weekly news, was quickly followed by it’s cable show which airs one hour every week. Since then the network has assumed the role of not only voicing Ethiopian Muslims civil rights violations, but also providing a platform for topics as varied as interfaith dialogue, discussions on marriage, and health treatment options. All of its transmissions are in Amharic, Ethiopia’s official language. In And Out A team of 24 journalists based in Ethiopia is at the heart of this communication web. Some with no experience and others with 30, these journalists collect reports on the ground and launch them to Ethiopian Broadcast Systems in the U.S. With the speed and immediacy of the Internet, the group has been able to expose key events in the nation. In the Christian holy city of Axum – a land where Muslims emigrants once sought safe harbor during the Prophet’s (Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa salaam) time - Muslims cannot be buried. Their bodies must be carried 10-20 kilometers to burial grounds outside the city. “You’re born there, raised there, but you can’t die there,” Mohammed said. The past few Fridays, over 30,000 Ethiopian Muslims have gathered for Jumu’ah to protest the Al-Ahbash’s tightening role over the school system. “It’s not like how it used to be. They’re sending out these stories from their smart phones. It’s liberating. We don’t have to go through censorship or harassment. The layman can contribute. It’s something of its own,” board chairperson Najib Mohammed said. Viewed in the backdrop of a new age of social media, Bilal Communication’s programs echo the driving role of the Internet in the Arab Spring. But for Najib, the only parallel between Bilal and the Arab Spring is the use of technology, illustrating a key point about Bilal: it is first and foremost a platform for social and civil rights discussion. “We don’t dwell in politics. That’s what’s keeping us going,” Mohammed said. Just A Voice? Despite avoiding politics, Bilal Communications has become more than a news aggregator, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is. It blurs the space between citizen journalism and professional reporting - its news is a blend of news from the ground and from professional journalists – and it gives Ethiopian Muslims a voice and monetary support, with the hope that its investments will reap fruits for the community. It has sponsored needy college students that would have otherwise left the school system, began a Hifzh program for countryside orphans to spread the Quran, sponsored 20 ‘Ulama who have abandoned spreading the true message of Islam in order to beg for money, and it has raised awareness of kidney dialysis. Many dialysis patients without the means to purchase the life saving equipment have their hopes pinned on donors plugged into the Bilal network. “It’s really supporting the whole country – Muslims and Christians,” Mohammed said. Given how spread out Bilal Communications is, it is difficult to determine how many people watch and listen to their shows; however, organizers estimate the numbers reach thousands. Bilal Radio averages a thousand hits per day. A Look Back – And Ahead The days of its lost radio frequency, however, have not gone past the group yet. The network still walks shaky grounds in a country where the state controls most broadcasting outlets, including the sole national TV network, and where private stations are closely monitored - a kind of legislative arsenal that has eroded “the democratic space and freedom of expression,” said media rights group Reporters Without Borders in 2012. The government owns the sole ISP, “allowing it to censor when and where it sees fit”, the Committee to Protect Journalists reported in 2011. “They’re watching us,” Mohammed said, “We’re afraid they can shut us down if they want.” The government’s hawk-eye, however, has taken a backseat, since Bilal network’s funding from a variety of sources, covering topics that bridge understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims, and operating on the Internet prevents the Ethiopian government from letting down a hard hammer. Financing – the main cause of the lost radio frequency – is a day-to-day worry. Bilal Communications has expenses of $14,000 a month and has now launched a campaign to raise funds. Its first fundraiser in the Washington DC area will be on April 8th at Clarion Hotel, 6400 Oxen Road, Oxenhill, Md. from 4 – 10 p.m. “If we can get 12 communities around the world to cover each month, we’ll cover finances for the entire year,” Mohammed said, “For a community this big, we can afford that.” As far as the ever-changing world of journalism is concerned, the question mark is even bigger, Mohammed said. “It’s really hard to tell what will happen next. There may be peaceful revolution everywhere – not just in Ethiopia. Technology is advancing fast,” he said, “We can too.” ------------------------------------------------ For more information on Bilal Communications, visit: http://www.bilalcommunication.com/bci/. Ramallah 24-03-2012 IMEMC & Agencies: A Palestinian child was wounded in the face by a rubber-coated metal bullet fired by Israeli soldiers who attacked nonviolent protesters against the Wall and Settlements in Nabi Saleh village, near the central West Bank city of Ramallah; a second child was shot and injured in the leg. Medical sources reported that Ez Ed-Deen Tamimi, 15, was treated by medics before he was moved to the Ramallah Medical Center suffering moderate injuries. A second child, identified as Osama Bilal Tamimi, 16, was shot by a rubber-coated metal bullet in his foot; his injury was described as mild. The army also fired dozens of gas bombs and concussion grenades at the nonviolent protesters, including Israeli and international peace activists, and also sprayed them with chemical-contaminated water. Dozens of protesters suffered the effects of teargas inhalation. It is worth mentioning that a team of the International Workers Union, including the head of the Union, participated in the protest to express solidarity with the Palestinian people facing ongoing aggression by the Israeli occupation, its soldiers and settlers. The Union’s head expressed solidarity with the Palestinian detainees, including female detainee Hana’ Ash-Shalabi who has been on hunger-strike since she was kidnapped by the army on February 16. He added that Nabi Saleh village is a symbol of steadfastness and nonviolence resistance against the illegal Israeli policies, including Israel’s Annexation Wall and Settlements in the West Bank. The protestors were also marking the first anniversary of the kidnapping of Basem Tamimi, a local figure and leader of the nonviolent resistance movement in the village who was kidnapped by the soldiers, and remains imprisoned by Israel through a process of endless “legal proceedings” that are only meant to keep him behind bars without charges. The army surrounded the village since early morning hours and installed a roadblock on its main entrance in an attempt to prevent journalists, activists and even medical teams from entering the village, local sources reported. (LBC) Tadias Magazine News Update Wednesday, March 14, 2012 New York (TADIAS) – The Ethiopian domestic worker that was violently mistreated outside the Ethiopian embassy in Beirut, as shown in a viral video last weekend, has committed suicide, Ethiopia’s Consul General confirmed to local media in Lebanon. Alem Dechasa, 33, hanged herself using her bed sheets Wednesday morning, the Daily Star newspaper reported. “My body is shaking and my heart is broken” said Ms. Zewditu Fessehaa, Chairwoman of the Ethiopian Social Assistance Committee in New York City, whose organization has been mobilizing efforts to assist the victim. “It’s depressing, it’s very sad and it’s unfair. She added: “As a mother I want to appeal to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia to do something. Our daughters are being treated like dogs and there is nothing we can do about it.” Ethiopian General Consul Asaminew Debelie Bonssa spoke to the Daily Star following a visit to the hospital where she killed herself. According to the newspaper, the Ethiopian consulate official said he saw Alem Dechasa Saturday and she appeared fine. The diplomat also said doctors told him they checked on her at 5 a.m. this morning and when they returned at 6 a.m. she was dead. Bonssa said he was ‘deeply shocked’ by the news.” In New York, the ESAC chairwoman called for a collective response. “I want to appeal to everyone. We need to pull together to stop this madness,” Ms. Fessehaa said. “The cruelty directed against domestic workers is a human rights issue.” She added: “It needs an in-depth understanding, and an innovative solution within and beyond the Ethiopian community. We need people from every profession to assist us to make sure that our sister did not die in vain.” Meanwhile, a vigil to mourn Alem Dechasa’s death is scheduled in front of the Lebanon embassy on Thursday, at 11 AM in Washington D.C. – Read more
  • Facebook is not closing down on March 15

If you spend a better part of your life living out of Facebook, rejoice. Facebook won't be closing on March 15 after all. Surprised? Read on ... More than one million people have already fallen for a hoax that claims that the popular social networking site will be shutting down on March 15 According to IT security firm Sophos, a bogus news story published by the "Weekly World News", said Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had told reporters that "managing [Facebook] has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness." Some panic-stricken Facebook users and mischief-mongers spread the story far and wide across the internet in no time. Although Facebook debunked the hoax via its Twitter account late on Sunday, users still continue to pass the bogus messages onto their online friends. The "Weekly World News" article went on to quote another company official, Avrat Humarthi, vice-president of technical affairs at Facebook, as saying "After March 15th the whole website shuts down. So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won't be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business." Sophos said that many people would not believe the report, which comes from a newspaper that has previously reported George Clooney is running for president and that alien spacecrafts will visit earth in 2011. However, it only takes only a small number of people to think it might be possible to turn a joke of a news story into an internet hoax as has been proved many a times in the past few years. "I certainly wouldn't disagree that users would be wise to have their own backup of their photographs, rather than rely on Facebook -- but it's nothing more than a scare to suggest to people that they have to do it before March15th because Facebook is going to close down," explained Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. "There's an important lesson here -- don't believe everything you read on the internet, and think twice before you pass a story on to your friends." Although a hoax is not as serious as malware worming its way between users and stealing information, it's still a nuisance, clogging up communications, increasing the overall level of spam and perhaps leading people to make decisions for the wrong reasons. A number of Facebook users had earlier last week reported fallen prey to another viral scam -- My 1st St@atus -- which was designed to earn revenue for its perpetrators. Messages claiming to share the users' first ever Facebook status updates were being posted on users' walls by a rogue application. Typical posts read -- "My 1st St@tus was: '[random message]'. This was posted on [random date]. Find your 1st St@tus @ [LINK]". When users clicked on this link, which appeared to have been posted by a Facebook friend, they were taken to a rogue Facebook application. This application would then ask users to give it permission to access their profile. This would give the rogue application the ability to post the same message from the affected account to all in the friends' list. Users were also taken to a webpage which contained a survey. Those behind such scams make commission from the number of people completing this survey and in some cases, Facebook users might also be asked for their mobile phone numbers in order to sign them up for an expensive, premium-rate service. "Sadly, many people are all too quick to give permission to rogue applications like this, giving the bad guys free reign of their Facebook account," said Cluley. "If users allow these applications to access their profiles, they may well find that the application has posted a message on their Facebook page, which is visible to all of their online friends, helping to spread the scam further. I deliberately infected a test account with this application, and it didn't even get my first status or the date correct! Unfortunately, by the time users realised this, they might have already helped the scammers by spreading the message across their network," he added. Facebook users who have been affected should delete references to this scam from their wall, to avoid sharing it further with their online friends Read more
  • U.S. Soldier Murders 16 in Afghanistan

14 Afghani Women & Children, 2 men Killed & More Wounded by U.S. Soldier Panjwai, Afghanistan -- March 12, 2012 U.S. Army sergeant broke into homes of innocent civilians and began slaughtering them in cold blood, according to news releases from that area today. This is what we know so far (and more tonight on Islam Newsroom LIVE on www.GuideUS.TV) 9 Children, 3 Women & 2 Men Are Dead, Many More Wounded by One U.S. Soldier in South Afghanistan Sunday. A U.S. soldier broke down doors, burst into huts and blasted poor villagers, killing and wounding as many as he could. Afghanistan President, Hamid Karzai, called it "assassinations" and quickly demanded Washington to come up with some kind of explanation. Nine of those killed were small children, three were women and two were old men. Many more were wounded but that count is not yet confirmed. U.S. soldier burst into homes of villagers close to his military base in south Afghanistan yesterday (Sunday March 11, 2012). He killed (I'm sorry - when it's not Muslims you have to say "allegedly killed") anyway, allegedly killed 14 women and children and two men. A U.S. soldier is now being detained in a facility at NATO. He is suspected of being a lone shooter in this incident, according to authorities there at NATO. This story is too hard to report and far too bizarre to understand, yet this is our job and we'll do our best to get the real details and report LIVE on www.GuideUS.TV tonight (inshallah). Please consider this - if we don't have our own voice in America, then what information would we really have?? -- READ . . This is the way the media is telling the story -- The killing spree deepened a crisis between US forces and their Afghan hosts over Americans burning Muslim holy books on a base in Afghanistan last month. The burnings sparked weeks of violent protests and attacks that left some 30 dead. Six US service members have been killed by their Afghan colleagues since the Koran burnings came to light, but the violence had just started to calm down. "This is an assassination, an intentional killing of innocent civilians and cannot be forgiven," Karzai said in a statement. He said he has repeatedly demanded the US stop killing Afghan civilians. Her grandchild lies there - dead. A victim of what? Why? We want answers. And we can do it right here (leave your comments at bottom of page) And use Facebook too! Deadly .... Anar Gul points to the body of her grandchild, who was allegedly killed by a US soldier. Photo: AP President Barack Obama called the attack "tragic and shocking" and offered his condolences to the families of those killed. In a statement released by the White House, he vowed ‘‘to get the facts as quickly as possible and to hold accountable anyone responsible’’. The violence over the Koran burnings has spurred calls in the US for a faster exit strategy from the 10-year-old Afghan war. President Obama even said recently that "now is the time for us to transition". But he also said he had no plan to change the current timetable that has Afghans taking control of security countrywide by the end of 2014. In the wake of the Koran burnings, the top US commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen, visited troops at a base that was attacked last month and urged them not to give in to the impulse for revenge. The tensions between the two countries had appeared to be easing as recently as Friday, when the US and Afghan governments signed a memorandum of understanding about the transfer of Afghan detainees to Afghan control - a key step toward an eventual strategic partnership to govern U.S. forces in the country. But Sunday's shooting could push that agreement further away. "This is a fatal hammer blow on the US military mission in Afghanistan. Whatever sliver of trust and credibility we might have had following the burnings of the Koran is now gone," said David Cortright, the director of policy studies at Notre Dame's Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and an advocate for a quick withdrawal from Afghanistan. "This may have been the act of a lone, deranged soldier. But the people of Afghanistan will see it for what it was, a wanton massacre of innocent civilians," Cortright said. The attack began about 3am in two villages in Panjwai, a rural suburb of Kandahar and a traditional Taliban stronghold where coalition forces have fought for control for years. The villages — Balandi and Alkozai — are about 500 metres from a US base. The gunman went into three houses and opened fire, said a resident of Alkozai, Abdul Baqi, citing accounts from his neighbours. "When it was happening in the middle of the night, we were inside our houses. I heard gunshots and then silence and then gunshots again," Baqi said. Eleven of those killed were members of one family, many of them women and children. An AP photographer saw 15 bodies in the two villages caught up in the shooting. Some of the bodies had been burned, while others were covered with blankets. A young boy partially wrapped in a blanket was in the back of a minibus, dried blood crusted on his face and pooled in his ear. His loose-fitting brown pants were partly burned, revealing a leg charred by fire. It was unclear how or why the bodies were burned. Villagers packed inside the minibus looked on with concern as a woman spoke to reporters. She pulled back a blanket to reveal the body of a smaller child wearing what appeared to be red pyjamas. A third dead child lay amid a pile of green blankets in the bed of a truck. Some villagers questioned whether a single soldier could have killed so many people. But a US official in Washington said the American, an Army staff sergeant, was believed to have acted alone and that initial reports indicated he returned to the base after the shooting and turned himself in. Five people were shot in the pre-dawn attack in Kandahar province, including a 15-year-old boy named Rafiullah who was shot in the leg and spoke to Karzai over the telephone. He described how the American soldier entered his house in the middle of the night, woke up his family and began shooting them, according to Karzai's statement. NATO officials apologised for the shootings but did not confirm that anyone was killed, referring instead to reports of deaths. "This deeply appalling incident in no way represents the values of ISAF and coalition troops or the abiding respect we feel for the Afghan people," Allen said in a statement, using the abbreviation for NATO's International Security Assistance Force. He pledged a "rapid and thorough investigation" and vowed to ensure that "anyone who is found to have committed wrongdoing is held fully accountable". Caitlin Hayden, a spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council, said Mr Obama was briefed on the shooting. "We are deeply concerned by the initial reports of this incident, and are monitoring the situation closely," she said. NATO spokesman Justin Brockhoff said a US service member had been detained at a NATO base as the alleged shooter. The wounded people were evacuated to NATO medical facilities, he added. International forces have fought for control of Panjwai for years as they've tried to subdue the Taliban in their rural strongholds. The Taliban movement started just to the north of Panjwai and many of the militant group's senior leaders, including chief Mullah Omar, were born, raised, fought or preached in the area. Omar once ran an Islamic school in an area of Panjwai that has since been carved into a new district. In addition to its symbolic significance, the district is an important base for the Taliban to target the city of Kandahar to the east. Panjwai was seen as key to securing Kandahar city when US forces flooded the province as part of Obama's strategy to surge in the south starting in 2009. Twelve of the dead were from Balandi, said Samad Khan, a farmer who lost all 11 members of his family, including women and children. Khan was away from the village when the incident occurred and returned to find his family members shot and burned. One of his neighbours was also killed, he said. "This is an anti-human and anti-Islamic act," said Khan. "Nobody is allowed in any religion in the world to kill children and women." Khan and other villagers demanded that Karzai punish the American shooter. "Otherwise we will make a decision," said Khan. "He should be handed over to us." The four people killed in the village of Alkozai were all from one family, said a female relative who was shouting in anger. She did not give her name because of the conservative nature of local society. "No Taliban were here. No gunbattle was going on," said the woman. "We don't know why this foreign soldier came and killed our innocent family members. Either he was drunk or he was enjoying killing civilians." The Taliban called the shootings the latest sign that international forces are working against the Afghan people. "The so-called American peace keepers have once again quenched their thirst with the blood of innocent Afghan civilians in Kandahar province," the Taliban said in a statement posted on a website used by the insurgent group. Karzai said he was sending a high-level delegation to investigate. OK that's the way the media has the story now - Our conclusion on Guide US TV is - patience and perserverance! That is what Islam teaches us. We know all of this is a test from Allah and we can NEVER take the law into our hands - NEVER. So remind each other about Surah Al Asr - and read it again and again until it comes to you the true answer from Islam. This is not for us to hate and kill and strike back. It is the time to prove the real character of our prophet, peace be upon him. He suffered so much, but never did he act from his own emotions or inflict punishment on others without due process of law and fair justice. Read more
  • Muslim medical students boycotting lectures on evolution... because it 'clashes with the Koran'

Muslim medical students boycotting lectures on evolution... because it 'clashes with the Koran' Conflict: An increasing number of Muslim biology students are boycotting lectures on the theories of Charles Darwin Muslim students, including trainee doctors on one of Britain's leading medical courses, are walking out of lectures on evolution claiming it conflicts with creationist ideas established in the Koran. Professors at University College London have expressed concern over the increasing number of biology students boycotting lectures on Darwinist theory, which form an important part of the syllabus, citing their religion. Similar to the beliefs expressed by fundamentalist Christians, Muslim opponents to Darwinism maintain that Allah created the world, mankind and all known species in a single act. Steve Jones emeritus professor of human genetics at university college London has questioned why such students would want to study biology at all when it obviously conflicts with their beliefs. More... If 745 youngsters are out of work in my town, why can't I find a recruit? Gove's drive to restore school standards is the best answer to the youth jobless crisis He told the Sunday Times: 'I had one or two slightly frisky discussions years ago with kids who belonged to fundamentalist Christian churches, now it is Islamic overwhelmingly. One of Muslim author Harun Yaha's articles denouncing Darwinism Theories: Turkish creationist Yahya associates Darwinism with Nazism 'They don't come [to lectures] or they complain about it or they send notes or emails saying they shouldn't have to learn this stuff. 'What they object to - and I don't really understand it, I am not religious - they object to the idea that there is a random process out there which is not directed by God.' Earlier this year Usama Hasan, iman of the Masjid al-Tawhid mosque in Leyton, received death threats for suggesting that Darwinism and Islam might be compatible. Sources within the group Muslims4UK partly blame the growing popularity of creationist beliefs within Islam on Turkish author Harun Yahya who, influenced by the success of Christian creationists in America, has written several books denouncing Darwinist theory. Yahya associates Dawinism with Nazism and his books are and videos are available at many Islamic bookshops in the UK and regularly feature on Islamic television channels. Speakers regularly tour Britain lecturing on Yahya's beliefs. Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins has expressed his concern at the walkouts One such lecture was given at UCL in 2008 and this year's talks have been given in London, Manchester, Leeds, Dundee and Glasgow. Evolutionary Biologist and former Oxford Professor Richard Dawkins has expressed his concern at the number of students, consisting almost entirely of Muslims, who do not attend or walk out of lectures. 15 Palestinians killed, 30 injured, in 24 hrs by Israeli bombing 11-03-2012 IMEMC News: As Israel continues its military offensive against the Gaza Strip since Friday evening, Palestinian medical sources reported that the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli missiles arrived to 15, while more than 30 were wounded. On Saturday evening, the Israeli Air Force carried out two strikes targeting Gaza city, and Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. Medical sources reported that one resident was killed in Rafah, while two others were wounded when the army bombarded a small wagon, near the tunnels area, west of Rafah.
