LIVE: Erdogan makes ‘era-changing’ announcement from Ankara

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is touting a ""major announcement"" in Ankara on Friday, August 21, marking what he said would be the ‘beginning of a new era’ for Turkey.

The announcement is taking place after weeks of renewed tensions between Ankara and Athens, this time over Turkey's move to send a seismic survey ship in a disputed area of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Turkey has long fought for the international recognition of what it considers its maritime boundaries in area which could be rich in gas and oil deposits, south of the Greek island of Kastellorizo which lies about 2km off the Turkish coast.

The move to send the survey ship to the area and issue an international maritime alert, also known as NAVTEX, also comes in light of a gas exploration deal struck between Greece and Egypt, which Turkey has rejected as ""null and void"".
